He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Brown leather-like fabric bound cover with gilt embossed lettering, embossed cover detail, and 5 raised bands on spine; gold red and dark brown. This has a lot of shelf wear, front cover edges are rubbed and chipped. The spine has been rubbed and corners bumped. Spine is straight. Binding is tight. Red marbled end sheets and paste downs are clean and bright. Title page and index page have multiple creases and tears but the print is readable. Contents are in very good condition. Thumbed index tabs. Page edges have a lot of dust. All reference pages are clean and not marked
