About This Item

New York: Seaver / The Viking Press, 1979. Softcover. Near Fine. Uncorrected proof. Spine trifle dulled with publication information written on it in ink, a near fine copy. Laid in is a Typed Letter Signed from Victoria Meyer of Viking Penguin Inc. to Barbara Epstein, founding co-editor of *The New York Review of Books*, sending the proof along. (N.B. The book is illustrated by the author but only the frontispiece is reproduced in the proof.) The University of Wisconsin Press, who reissued *Wild Man* in 2003 as part of their "Living Out: Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies" series, describes the book as "part autobiographical journal, part social-historical novel." For context, here is a portion of Schneebaum's 2005 obituary in *The New York Times*: "In 1955, Mr. Schneebaum, then a painter, won a Fulbright fellowship to study art in Peru. There, he vanished into the jungle and was presumed dead. Seven months later, he emerged, naked and covered in body paint. The experience had transformed him, he would later say, but in a way he could scarcely have imagined.
