About This Item
Pasadena CA: Ward Ritchie Press, 1976. Hardcover. xvi, 123p., illustrated with a manuscript facsimile serving as endsheet, and two photoportraits of the poet: a b&w frontispiece, uncredited, and the wraparound color dust jacket by Ansel Adams. Hardbound first edition in faux leather boards gilt and the splendid dust jacket. A near-fine copy with merest hints of handling to extremities: perfectly sound, clean and unmarked. The suppression consists of Random House editors worrying about libel (Jeffers names names, disapprovingly) and his seeming lack of patriotism. His book "The Double Axe" had poems left out and lines changed, this the original versions' first public exposure.
