About This Item
Berlin: verlegt bei Erich Reiss, 1921. Edition limited to 100 copies (this is copy 98), large 4to, 70 leaves, vignette lithograph portrait on title page, 10 full-page lithographs by Otto Baumberger, each one signed in the margin by him in pencil; original paste-paper boards, corners worn, extremities lightly rubbed, neatly rebacked for appearance sake, the sewing structure loose, but intact, edges uncut; occasional mild spotting, very good, in a new green cloth clamshell box. An early and uncharacteristic work by Otto Baumberger (1889-1961), the noted Swiss painter and poster artist. Early on, as an employee of Wolfensberger AG in Zurich, he acquired a thorough knowledge of lithographic technique, employed with precision in this rendering of Schiller's classic work. Later, Baumberger produced some 200 posters of great quality and style. His realistic rendering of a herringbone tweed coat became a classic of Swiss poster art.
