The author argues that Kelly developed the air-refining process for making steel some years before Bessemer patented it; the book includes discussion of patents, corporate histories, history of the manufacture of iron & steel, Andrew Carnegie, and Pittsburgh. Hardcover, full maroon cloth, gilt titling. General wear, corners bumped, some damage to the spine, small spot; ink names to endsheets, including a "Compliments W G Kelly" rubberstamp (Kelly died in 1888); hinges spilt internally; pages xv and [xvii] and their corresponding blank versos damaged, minor loss to text. Text clean; xv, [3], 258 pages; index, frontispiece & 7 b/w portraits.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. Octavo.
