About This Item

This is a handsome, fine binding copy of "WINDSOR CASTLE and its Environs" (1840) together with "VERSAILLES" (1839) by Leitch Ritchie. Two works bound together within one volume. Published by Longman, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longmans in London. The book is beautifully bound in full leather with gilt page edges on all sides, five raised bands on the spine, gilt decorations along the edges of the boards and perimeter of the inside covers, and a ribbon page marker. Nicely illustrated with 15 full-page engraved plates in "Windsor Castle" and 20 full-page engraved plates in "Versailles."

PROVENANCE: This copy contains the bookplate and signature of William Crowninshield Endicott, American politician and Secretary of War in the first administration of President Grover Cleveland (1885-1889).

Here are a few examples of the contents: King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table; Origin of Modern Chivalry; Derivation of the Name; Completion of the First Castle; Manners of the Time; The Governor of the Castle; Legend of the Leather Thong; Fortifications; Horrible Barbarity; Original Form of the Castle; Grand Entrance; Refinement of Cruelty; Officers of the Courts of Love; The Queen's Garter; Origin of the Poor Knights of Windsor; The Captives of Windsor; The Priest and the Butcher; Royal Romance; Queen Elizabeth; Windsor the Prison of its Master; Queen's Ball Room; King's Closet; Library; View from the Summit; Royal Tomb-House; Royal Chapel of St. George; West Window; Eton College; Fishing Temple; Frogmore; Queen Victoria...and much, much more.

Condition:
Some light soiling to the covers and spine. Bright gilt page edges on all sides of the text block. Sharp cover corners. Tight binding with no loose pages. There is a crack at the front hinge between the frontispiece and title page - despite the crack, the front cover is still firmly in place and is not shaky. Foxing to the engraved plates, and to the pages before/after them. Previous owner's bookplate affixed to the front pastedown. The front end paper has 2 names written in pen and the date 1847. The ribbon page marker is present but has detached from the top edge at the spine. Overall the book is in Very Good- condition.
