Third edition of 'Wisdom and Destiny,' translated by Alfred Sutro. Essay concerned with joy and sorrow and the soul of man. First English translation of 'The Double Garden' by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. Containing essays meditating on time, space, the future, natural beauties, &c. Maurice Maeterlinck was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. In the original publisher's green cloth bindings. Externally very smart with minor shelf wear only, lightly bumped to head and tail of spine and extremities. Back strips darkened. Boards lightly marked. Previous ownership inscription to front free endpaper, undated, and embossed stamp (38 Chelsea Gardens. London) to half title 'The Double Garden'. Gift inscription to verso front free endpaper 'Wisdom and Destiny' dated 1904. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean. Very Good
