About This Item

University of Chicago Press (2005).. Owners signature ffep. soft crease to rear wrap hence VG condition. an attractive copy.. 396pp large format paperback. 0.6kg. Author lived in Soweto for a total of 36 months. Examines how people in Soweto and elsewhere manage their fears of 'evil forces' such as witchcraft, and the dynamics of insecurity at the turn of the 20thC. He develops a framework for understanding occult violence as a form of spiritual insecurity and documents new patterns of interpretation for attributing agency to evil forces. Finally he analyses the response of the post-apartheid government to issues of spiritual insecurity and suggests how these matters pose severe long-term challenges to the legitimacy of the democratic state.
