About This Item
London: Ward Lock, 1876. Hardcover. Very Good/No dust jacket. Scarce, early reprint with illustrations (it appears papback editions were published without). Earliest printing was 1876, under the Ward, Lock & Tyler; this printing undated. One leaf of ads at end, with no listings by this author; prices are 2 s. or 2s. 6d. for "cloth gilt." This copy in unusual red cloth, ornately decorated in black and gold, with enlarged "M" of title on front board in light blue. "Erckmann-Chatrian Library" on front board (this title was no. 19 in the publisher's list of 20, though no list appears in this copy). Glossy yellow endpapers with former owner signature. Hinges with minor expert reinforcement, else a near fine, bright copy. In addition to the werewolf title, collects six other stories including "Queen of the Bees" (not listed in contents, but appearing as the final story). Includes ghost and supernatural stories "Uncle Christian's Inheritance" and "A Night in the Woods." Famous in their day for historical romances, Erckmann-Chatrian's lesser-known supernatural stories were admired by M.R. James.
