Germany's World War II U-boat fleet was a truly elite fighting force. The U-Bootwaffe represented the cream of Germany's naval personnel, and in technology, training, tactics and combat success, the German fleet was far superior to that of any other combatant nation.Few members of any elite formation in WW2 sacrificed so many of their number in battle as the members of the German U-Bootwaffe.Estimates of losses vary between 75 and 80 percent.
This book tells the complete U-boat story. The wartime development of the U-boat is traced from the Type 1 through to the Type XXIII,and the experiences of typical U-boat crewmen are brought to life.Operational tactics are examined, and the massive bunkers that housed the U-boat fleets are described and illustrated.
