About This Item
Indianapolis: The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1906. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. Hardcover. Tight, very good copy, minor rubbing to the spine strip. 371 pages. Rita Van Arsdale is in love with the man of her dreams but things get complicated when the man is accused of murder. Brooklyn-born Anna Katherine Green (1846-1935) was the first woman and one of the first overall American author of detective novels. Her first such book was "The Leavenworth Case", an 1878 bestseller that garnered critical acclaim from, most notably, Wilkie Collins. She largely developed the serial detective character (Ebenezer Gryce of the New York City police) as well as the proto-Miss Marple type (spinster Amelia Butterworth who assisted him) and also created the "girl dectective" (debutante Violet Strange who secretly plays sleuth).
