About This Item
New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1961. Account of the 1854 wreck of the Collins Line flagship 'Arctic' off the Newfoundland coast in a fog; of nearly 400 on board, only 86 or 87 were saved, all of them men. Here the author, great-grandson of the President of the Collins Line, many of whose family were on board, details the wreck & its causes, the aftermath & effect on safety regulations, and the fates - and excuses - of the survivors. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book; jacket shows minor scuffing, crease to front flap, hint of waterstain to lower front corner, worse waterstain to rear corner - book seems unaffected; rubberstamped name. Text clean; 255 pages + 16 b/w plates; index, appendix, poem. . First American Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. Octavo.
