About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1977. First edition, first impression, of this story collection written for a slightly older readership than his other books for children. It includes two semi-autobiographical stories, one relating Dahl's experiences as a fighter pilot in the Second World War, the other exploring his motivations to become a writer. A film adaptation of the titular story premiered in September 2023. Directed by Wes Anderson, the cast included Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine lettered in gilt, beige endpapers, top edge yellow. With dust jacket. Double-page photographic illustration for the story "The Mildenhall Treasure" after the real pieces of exquisite Roman tableware. Spine ends bumped, faint splash marks to fore edge and jacket verso, text clean; price-clipped jacket spine sunned, small tears repaired and reinforced with paper on verso: a very good copy in like jacket.

Synopsis

Seven superb stories, from the world's no. 1 storyteller Meet the boy who can talk to animals and the man who can see with his eyes closed. And find out about the treasure buried deep underground. A cleaver mix of fact and fiction, this collection also includes how master storyteller Roald Dahl became a writer. With Roald Dahl, you can never be sure where reality ends and fantasy begins.
