About This Item

Tokyo. Japan: T. Hasegawa, 10 Hiyoshicho,. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1896. Unknown. Paperback. A charming illustrated woodblock book printed on "chirimen-bon" (crepe paper ) paper and bound in Yamato-toji style - sewn at the spine with 2 silk ties. Some slight discolouration/fading to the outer wrappers otherwise very good. No date shown but circa 1896 given the 10 Hiyoshicho address which is the Hasegawa address between 1890 and 1901. 14 double-sided leaves including the Illustrated wrappers/covers. Internally no inscriptions and overall very clean and bright, with the odd printing flaw and some light creasing and faint undulating as usual with this type of paper, and found in most of these delicate books. Typical delightful Japanese colour illustrations throughout. 'The Wonderful Tea Kettle' is an old Japanese fairy/folk tale telling the story of an old priest and his desire to lead the Chanoyu ceremony. Whilst in meditation, his tea kettle begins to shake and merges into a badger..." . Mrs T. H. (Kate) James has used the translation 'badger' in this tale but 'Bunbuku Chagama', literally "Bunbuku tea-kettle" is actually a Japanese folktale or fairy tale about a Raccoon dog, or Tanuki. Either way - this is a delightful story. See Images. ; Japanese Fairy Tale Series; 16mo 6" - 7" tall .
