About This Item

Miami: Author, 2008. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. 21 unbound pages within custom clamshell box, bound in rich brown Asahi book cloth, with 20 archival pigment prints tipped in, with the addition of a signed and numbered original photogravure image, 2” x 3” and corresponding solarplate, original to this Limited Edition of 35 + 5 Artist’s Proofs. Designed, printed and assembled by the artist using Fabriano and Canson papers. A continuation of Dakhnovskaia-Lawton’s project “Wondering about Pictorialism” done on a more accessible scale, including twelve new images. This strategy unifies the intimacy of the image and the format of the book into a new, contemporary approach. Dakhnovskaia-Lawton’s inspiration was originally drawn from the 19th century pictorial aesthetic and Stieglitz’s “Camera Work” magazine, as she embarked on a long journey in trying not only to comprehend the intricacy of the old-fashioned aesthetic but also in an attempt to bring it into contemporary life. In this project, by emphasizing the small image scale along with the pictorial language and using a muted monochrome tone of photogravures, the artist successfully creates a personal connection between image and viewer - bringing the old sensibility into our everyday life.
