Letter is signed at foot of p.2 by Wheatley in ink, and a handwritten note added by Wheatley, also in ink: "One is almost afraid to avow love for anyone of the same sex nowadays! 1886. Albumen photograph mounted on card. 150mm x 110mm overall. Tenants of building (as per signs) include: Union Bank of Australia, Alex Brown Colliery, Belgian & US Consulate, New Lambton Colliery Indemnity Fire and Machinery Insurance, Hewison Shipping Insurance & General Commission Agent. According to Newcastle Library records these businesses were located in a bank building in Newcastle, but pictorial records depict a different building. It would seem highly coincidental if these same businesses were located at the same time in nearby East Maitland or Morpeth, but remains a possibility. No other pictorial records can be located..

Very light shelf wear on the end of the spine, and the very tips of the outer corner of front and rear covers (no board exposed or break in cloth). Gilt on spine is complete and bright. All maps present and no foxing or marking to pages. Binding sturdy and tight. Signed by Herbert E. Bolton on presentation book plate on front free endpaper: " To my good friend, Joseph W. Flinn, master of the printer's art, collaborator in the making of this book. With grateful regards, Herbert Bolton". Joesph W. Flinn was Superintendent of the University of California Press where this book was printed.

The story of Hugh Tallant, highwayman, and the infamous penal colony established in Australia in 1788. Book is in Very Good Condition: spine slightly sunned; 1/2-cm. split in cloth at head of spine; fore-edges slightly soiled; otherwise clean and tight. Dust jacket is in Good Condition: rubbed; creasing at edges; chipping at ends of spine; separated for 5 cm. from tail along front joint; old repairs at ends of spine on inside of dust jacket; spine is sunned; front section bright; not price-clipped.

Inscribed by Symons on the front free endpaper " To Dora Gordine from Arthur Symons November 14: 1928(?)". A very good tidy copy in publishers beige cloth with dark green label, lettered and with wavy line border, all in gilt, to the spine. Top edge gilt. Dora Gordine was a noted Estonian Sculptor who regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and Leicester Galleries in London as well as shows at The Fine Art Society & The London Jewish Museum of Art. Symons was a great champion of her work. Reviewing one of her Leicester Galleries exhibitions in a 1938 edition of the Spectator, Symons wrote; 'Her profound sense of pure form in sculpture, heedless alike of realism and of exaggerated abstraction, is united with the subtlest delicacy of modelling, and these qualities combine to endow her bronzes with an abnormal power, an almost uncanny life, which only the sculpture of the greatest civilisations of the past has… Read More
