Charles H. Hayward (1898-1998) was the most important workshop writer and editor of the 20th century. He was a cabinetmaker, illustrator, designer, writer, editor and photographer. As editor of The Woodworker magazine from 1939 to 1967, Hayward oversaw the transformation of the craft from one that was almost entirely hand-tool based to a time where machines were common, inexpensive and had displaced the handplanes, chisels and backsaws of Hayward's training and youth.

Some of what Hayward published was gathered together in five books. This is one of those books, Volume IV, The Shop and Furniture. It covers the design and construction of workbenches, tool chests and wall cabinets. There's also a section devoted to workshop accessories such as shooting boards. It covers Furniture & Details, including the important Western furniture styles, and their construction, mouldings and metal hardware. This section also includes the construction drawings for many important and famous pieces of furniture examined by Charles H. Hayward during his tenure at The Woodworker magazine. The book, which is a stated first printing, is packed with illustrations and photographs.

It is 323 pages and is in very fine condition except that the cover was sprinkled with plaster dust and there's a tiny tea stain on the side. But that's why it's priced the way it is.
