About This Item

Grant Richards, London., 1898. First edition. First state with suppressed design by the author on the upper cover. Octavo. pp xii, 403. At the rear is the publisher's 24-page catalogue dated Spring, 1898. The author's first book. The offending cover design, by the author, features a bare-breasted woman. The perceived general raciness of the book led to a ban in the U.S.A. which lasted for 25 years.Occasional light foxing. Small mark to front cover. Very good indeed.
