FULL PAGINATION: vi, (2), xxvi, 317 + 360 + lix, 60-292 + 314 + (12), xiv, 361 + (12), 366pp. ~Original full speckled polished calf, single gilt fillet framing boards. Raised bands, gilt decor and numerals, and hand-written title label per spine. Blind decor to board edges. Mild wear to spines and board edges. 12mos (11 x 17.3cm). All edges speckled red, top edges darkened. Some endpapers starting at gutters, but hinges sound. Offset browning to endpapers. A little worm damage to margins of vol. II, not affecting text. Bookplate to inside front board or front free endpaper of all vols ('ex libris Roger Quirk'; Roger Quirk, 1909-1964, historian and civil servant). Dark blue ownership stamp 'R*L' to all tps. Minor scattered foxing. Old repairs to vol I, p. 117, vol. II, p. 121, vo. III, pp. 37-40, slightly affecting text. 24 plates (7 to vol. I, 11 to vol. II, 5 to vol. III, and frontis to vol. IV). A reprint of the edition of Pope's works by his literary executor, William Warburton, first published in 1751 and bringing together 'the extraordinary sequence of different imaginative works which (Pope) achieved, almost, as it seems, every five years of his short adult life' (ODNB).
