Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1850. Hardcover. Good Plus. ALL EDGES GILT. Gilt edges in very nice condition on both volumes. Light soiling to board surfaces. Front and back of white boards are framed in .375" gilt design which is then framed on either side by a thin black line. These designs are moderately worn to both volumes. Beautiful maroon, cream and teal marbled endpapers. "In Memoriam", with the initials WS or SW, is on front board of both volumes. Volumes are lightly age-tanned with foxing to front and rear fly-leaves. Six inches of spine on Vol. I is beginning to detach from front cover. Slight lift to rear board from text. Top front and bottom corners bumped. A faint bit of rippling to a few rear pages. Text of Volume II is lightly rippled with front and rear boards moderately lifted from text. Both volumes clean and solidly bound. 630 / 840 pp with index. HEAVY. May require EXTRA shipping. Richard Hooker (1554 -- 1600) was an English Anglican priest and an influential theologian. He was one of the ost important English theologians of the sixteenth century. Hooker was ordained a priest in 1579 by Edwin Sandys, bishop of London. "In 1580 he was deprived of his fellowship for "contentiousness" having campaigned for the losing candidate (Rainoldes) in a contested election to the presidency of the college. However, he recovered it when Rainoldes finally assumed the post," (Wikipedia).
