About This Item

London: Grant Richards, 1904. First thus. Hardcover. Very Good+. W. Heath Robinson. Two volumes. Stout 4to. Vol. I: Pp. xlii, 377; Vol. II: Pp. xliv, 350. Numerous plates and text illustrations. TEG, fore-edge untrimmed. White blindstamped buckram with gilt lettering and decoration. Spines slightly darkened, as usual, and some soiling to cloth. Corners bumped. Else, a crisp set. For centuries prudes have identified Rableais's work as containing many unseemly characteristics: licentiousness, grotesqueries, coarse and ribald satire, etc. In short, the qualities one looks for in entertaining literature. This set comprises a great partnership: Rabelais's delightfully vulgar tales are complemented by Robinson's witty and developed eye.
