About This Item
The Rev. Gilbert White (1720-1793), best known for his Natural History of Selborne - a classic of both natural history and English literature - was in close contact with the leading naturalists of the day: Sir Joseph Banks, Thomas Pennant, Daniel Solander, Forster, William Curtis, and Sir Ashton Lever. He followed Cook and Banks' voyage in the Endeavour closely, and later wrote of an ironic twist: "A gent. came the other day, and said he understood that there was a Mr. White who had lately published two books, a good one and a bad one; the bad one was concerning Botany Bay, the better respecting some parish".
