New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1936-37. 14 volumes. First of the Triton Edition, one of 940 numbered sets SIGNED by Santayana. Portrait frontispiece in Volume I. 8vo, publisher's original half tan muslin over blue boards, the spine with lettering labels printed in blue and red, the upper cover with central gilt ornamental device, deckled edges. A handsome set, light nomal age wear to the extremities, primarily from shelving. FIRST EDITION OF THE WORKS PUBLISHED IN THIS FORMAT, SIGNED. 'Santayana began his literary career in 1894 with the publication of SONNETS AND OTHER VERSES, but after the turn of the century the bulk of his work was philosophical. He was a Spanish-American philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. Born in Spain, Santayana was raised and educated in the US from the age of eight and identified himself as an American, although he always retained a valid Spanish passport.
