London: Longmans, Green & Co, 1902. Limited First Edition. hardcover. Very Good. 11 5/8" × 8 1/4" (29.5 × 21 cm) . First Thus. Printed by Chiswick Press. Large 4to. Bound in publisher's original hardcover quarter Holland-backed blue paper boards, with blue linen spine and paper title label. One of 315 (of which 300 were for sale) copies. Printed on fine, hand-made, W M and floral watermarked paper. Uncut, deckled edges. Colophon. [iii], 238, [iv] pp. Part of a William Morris series comprising eight large quarto books printed at the Chiswick Press with the Golden type designed by Morris for his Kelmscott Press, 1901–1902. Chapter headings and shoulder notes in red. Finished on the twenty-fourth day of February, 1902. Spare label tipped in. The paper-covered boards show mild wear to the corners with chips to the top and bottom edges. Dust soiling to page edges. Spine very lightly and uniformly faded from blue to brown-grey, showing next to no wear and not unpleasing in appearance. Square and solidly bound. Free from the usual spotting and foxing of a book this age, excepting a few small spots to boards. Offsetting to endpapers, still a very nice copy with internal pages pristine, clean, white, and crisp. Bookplate of T.F.M Naughton, otherwise no markings whatsoever. All in all, the book is attractive and very well-preserved. A handsome copy. Condition overall: Very Good.
