The general approach is one which sees the past in terms of people rather than places. The kinds of questions that may be asked about each local community and the sources which can be used to answer them are outlined in a practical way. Up-to-date examples of studies made in various parts of the country are given and there are reproductions from many of the major nineteenth-century sources. The book, which is fully illustrated with maps, diagrams and plates, is complete in itself, but is particularly useful as an accompaniment to the series of BBC radio programmes of the same title, first broadcast 13 April to 15 June, and repeated 3 October to 5th December 1972.
