Paperback in wrapper. 18 × 10.5cm, 76pp. First published in 1929, this re-issue of Irish scientist and Communist activist J D Bernal seminal work with a new foreword by the author. Arthur C Clarke called it "the most brilliant attempt at scientific prediction ever made" and is a futuristic essay which explores the radical changes to human bodies and intelligence that science may bring about. It is famous for having been the first to propose the so-called Bernal sphere, a type of space habitat intended for permanent residence. The second chapter explores radical changes to human bodies and intelligence and the third discusses the impact of these on society. Condition: This copy is in very good condition, with a little light wear to the wrapper and page edges.
