About This Item

New York: W. W. Norton. Good with no dust jacket. 1982. First Edition; First Impression. Original Wrappers. 0393000818 . A. R. Ammons, whose full name is Archie Randolph Ammons, was an American poet known for his distinct and innovative style. He was born on February 18, 1926, in Whiteville, North Carolina, and passed away on February 25, 2001. Ammons received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Wake Forest University and went on to serve in the U. S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he completed his Master of Arts degree at the University of California, Berkeley. Ammons gained recognition for his poetry characterized by its expansive and exploratory nature. His work often delved into themes of nature, spirituality, and the human condition. He was associated with the New York School of poets and was influenced by both modernist and postmodernist literary traditions. One of Ammons' notable works is "Tape for the Turn of the Year," published in 1965. The poem is composed of a single sentence that stretches over several pages, reflecting his interest in the fluidity and elasticity of language. His collection "Garbage" (1993) won the National Book Award for Poetry, further establishing his reputation as a significant voice in American literature. Ammons' poetry frequently celebrated the natural world, exploring its vastness, beauty, and interconnectedness. His work was often characterized by its meditative quality, using precise and evocative language to create vivid imagery. He drew inspiration from his rural upbringing in North Carolina and his observations of the natural world. In addition to poetry, Ammons also wrote essays and served as a professor of English at Cornell University for many years. He received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Book Award, the Frost Medal, and the MacArthur Fellowship (also known as the "Genius Grant"). A. R. Ammons' contributions to American poetry have had a lasting impact, influencing subsequent generations of poets. His unique style and exploration of language and nature continue to be celebrated for their innovation and poetic vision. ; Covers plasticised. With library stamps and labels.
