Engraved frontis portrait of the author, extra engraved titles, many photogravures throughout. Introductions, glossary, and indexes. Three-quarter dark blue crushed morocco, light blue cloth sides, spines with raised bands and gilt elements between panels, top edges gilt. Spines very slightly faded, but a very fine, uncut set. Includes the scarce Volume XX (Stories and Poems), published separately in 1914. The 129 photogravure plates include frontispieces, two double-page maps and 20 pictorial extra-engraved title pages. The illustrations were drawn by major artists including Mary Hallock Foote, Eric Pape, J. M. Flagg, Frederic Remington, E. Boyd Smith, Charles M. Russell, Guy Rose, et al. Having worked as a successful journalist and writer in California, Bret Harte's reputation as a leading nineteenth century American man of letters was firmly established by the publication of his immensely successful collection, The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Sketches (1870). This brought him immediate recognition across the United States and he went on to write numerous novels and magazine contributions (most of which are gathered here)..
