Hardcover: full early original leather. 408 pages, two separate titles bound together as one book, with consistent, and uniform pagination, illustrated by 10 engraved plates (6 are fold out; plate 8 is misnumbered), and 6 woodcuts, and an appendix. Good condition: original early full leather binding, showing minimal wear, with title "Western Antiquities" in gilt lettering on red leather label on spine. Some foxing, nominal staining to margins mostly to the last pages of second title - not affecting the text, which is readable and intact; old rubber stamp of previous owner's name on front fly leaf, same name in faint pencil below title on title page, faint pencil marks to last fly leaf, top edge stained blue.

An early study of the ethnology, and anthropology of the Ohio Valley. The plates reflect the author's focus on Indian mounds. Also included are sections on Indian chiefs, Indian Eloquence," customs, traditions, and languages, among many other topics.
