About This Item

This is a handsome, 33 volume collection of "The Writings of WASHINGTON IRVING" in great condition. Limited "Book-Lover's New Sunnyside Edition" - #175 of only 600 printed. The volumes are beautifully illustrated, including full-page plates (each protected by tissue paper, on which is printed a description of the image), in-text illustrations, vignettes before and/or after chapters, and photographs ("Rip Van Winkle" features photographs of the actor Joseph Jefferson). The illustrations are from a variety of artists, most notably ARTHUR RACKHAM (see title page photo for the complete list of artists). Gilt top page edges. Printed on each front pastedown is an elaborate ex-libris label with a portrait of Irving and an illustration of "Sunnyside" (Irving's New York home). Circa early 1900's (there is no date of publication stated); G.P. Putnam's Sons; New York. The back covers feature the same embossed portrait and signature of Irving as the front covers, except not in gilt.

The collection includes the following works (all works are complete):
* Life of George Washington (8 volumes)
* The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon - including The Legend of Sleepy Hollow & Rip Van Winkle (2 volumes)
* Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus - And the Voyages and Discoveries of the Companions of Columbus (5 volumes)
* The Adventures of Captain Bonneville and Wolfert's Roost (2 volumes)
* Oliver Goldsmith, A Biography (2 volumes)
* Reviews and Miscellanies (1 volume)
* The Alhambra (2 volumes)
* Tales of a Traveller (2 volumes)
* Knickerbocker, A History of New York (2 volumes)
* The Crayon Miscellany (2 volumes)
* Spanish Papers (1 volume)
* Bracebridge Hall, or The Humourists (2 volumes)
* Chronicle of the Conquest of Granada (2 volumes)
NOTE: All works in this collection are complete, though - based on my research - I believe this set in its entirety contains 40 volumes in all.
**International buyers - please contact me prior to purchase regarding shipping**

Condition:
The volumes are in overall excellent condition - each was gone through and appear to be unread and are clean both inside and out. Fraying to the top-left corner of the spine and crack at the front hinge of Tales of a Traveller, volume 1; crack at front hinge of Crayon Miscellany, volume 2; crack at front hinge of Washington, volume 1. No other notable condition issues were found. Bright gilt on the front covers and spines. All volumes are tightly bound with no loose pages and sharp cover corners.
