About This Item
Yale University; New Haven, Conneticut; 1896. Rare. This is Volume I of the Yale Epitome. Tan cloth-covered boards, 9 1/2 x 6 7/8 inches, 192 pp. + 48 pp. of ads in the rear, b/w illustrations. Good (moderate soiling/staining, boards; sunning, spine; modest edgewear; small, inconspicuous dampstain, extreme lower right corner of book block; otherwise, pages clean and binding tight). From the Preface: "In presenting to the college public this first volume of the Yale Epitome the editors do so with hopes that it will be well received and that it will merit an honorable place among Yale annuals. It conflicts with none, yet supplements them all, as in no way is it intended to usurp any of the time-honored functions of the Banner, the Pot Pourri, the Shingle, or any of the class annuals. The aim of the editors has been simply to collect and publish in convenient form some of the best articles from Yale's current literature, and those that in the opinions of the several boards are most worthy of preservation. In addition to this, however, the editors desire to furnish in the Epitome a condensed annual of all the Yale student publications so as to show to those interested how little is deserved the adverse criticisms that have been showered by the press upon the literary interest and ability of the University." Contains selections from the Yale Literary Magazine, the Yale Courant, the Yale Record, the Yale Daily News, the Yale Alumni Weekly, the Yale Law Journal, the Yale Scientific Monthly and the Yale Medical Journal. Notably, the Yale Medical Journal section contains a very early radiograph. The legend of the radiograph states, "Vicious union after fracture of the left forearm, taken with x-rays by Professor Roentgen, at the State Physical Laboratory at Hamburg, January 25, 1896." The accompanying editorial says, "Apropos of the investigations now being carried on, of the newly-discovered X-rays, the Journal has inserted a reproduction of a photograph taken by Prof. Roentgen in his laboratory at Hamburg, Germany. The photograph is, we believe, the first reproduction in this country of a distinct pathological process taken from the living subject. The faulty union of the broken bones is brought out clearly and distinctly. This is but a forerunner of the possibilities of this latest discovery, the recognition of the value of which has produced a feverish agitation in the minds of scientific investigators. Among these posssibilities is this, that the surgeon can take advantage of this process in cases of doubt, where for any reason he is uncertain as to the diagnosis of a fracture, or the position of the bones."
