About This Item

Boston: Copyright Henderson & Ross; Published by Fidelity Trust Company; C.B. Webster & Co, 1917. Octavo, cord-tied in wrappers (23.5 x 15.5 cm.), 59, [2] pages. FIRST EDITION. A fascinating long historical view of the Crown Coffee House, a tavern at Boston's Long Wharf with roots in Oxford. The text is derived from a manuscript by Walter Kendall Watkins (1855-1934) which was used in the 1917 revision and expansion of Samuel Adams Drake's Old Boston Taverns and Tavern Clubs. Includes a detailed description of the building and of its long succession of owners and occupants, as well as a history of the origin and early years and leaders of the Fidelity Trust Company. Very light soil and a tiny spot or two to wrappers, otherwise fine, in publisher's brown printed tan wrappers, decorated with an engraving of the Tavern in its early years.
