About This Item

London: Cassell & Company, Limited, 1888. Duodecimo, (19 x 14 cm.), iv, 444, [16] pages. Index. Publisher's advertisements at rear. Date from publisher's list at rear. Later edition, stated "Eighteenth Thousand"; originally published in 1879. A menu for three meals for each day of the year. Each menu is accompanied by market advice, and recipes for the dishes. Dishes that are repeated supply the date to refer back in the book for the recipe. Perhaps most interesting are the "Things that must not be forgotten" section which follows each day's menu. Many of the things are instructions for preparing leftovers such as, "Preserve any cold turbot that may be left. Excellent fish cakes may be made for luncheon tomorrow" or "Make mutton pies for breakfast tomorrow of scraps of mutton that may be left." Some foxing throughout; date stamp to end blank. Hinges neatly reinforced. In publisher's green cloth; some wear and light rubbing to extremities. Generally good plus. Gift inscription dated 1889 to the front free endpaper. [OCLC locates five copies of this printing labeled "Eighteenth Thousand"; Driver 466.6].
