First edition, fourteenth printing, August 1931, as stated on the copyright page. Published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. Winner of the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for Novel (Fiction). Measures 5.5" x 7.75", 581 pages. Comes with a thirteenth printing dust jacket. The dust jacket is in fair condition. Toning to the jacket with chips and tears at the edges. Three inch closed tear to the top of the front panel. Heavy paper loss at the spine, affecting the publisher and title. Tape repairs made to the verso of the jacket to reattach the spine to the rear panel. The original price of $2.50 is present on the front flap. The book is in very good plus condition. The black cloth boards are well preserved with light shelf wear. Rubbing to the spine edges and titling. The textblock is clean, bright, unmarked, and complete. Included with the book is an original newspaper clipping with the photograph of the author and a caption that reads: "Mrs. Margaret Ayer Barnes, Chicago novelist, who will speak at the first session of the Conference on Major Problems at the Palmer House tomorrow under the auspices of The Tribune". There is also a Chicago train ticket stub from September 4th with the same age toning as the newspaper clipping. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store.
