Minor edge and corner wear; lightly scuffed and scratched; spine is lightly creased as well as the front of the wrapper; some light shelf wear; overall a very crisp and clean used copy! Brown and white wrapper with black lettering. 378 very clean unmarked and uncreased historical and informative pages nicely enhanced by black and white illustrations! "In the year 1835 Augustus Baldwin Longstreet published the book-length collection of his sketches of frontier low-life known as Georgia Scenes; John Pendleton Kennedy published his popular romance of the Revolution, Horse-shoe Robinson; Edgar Allan Poe assumed the editorship of the Southern Literary Messenger; and William Gilmore Simms published in April his romance of Indian warfare in the colonial South, The Yemassee, and in December the first of his seven loosely connected romances of the American Revolution, The Partisan. Never gain was one twelve-month period to represent the Old South so impressively in the literary market place, which had already established itself along an axis represented by the stagecoach rout linking Philadelphia and New York City; for the South's self-destructive preoccupation with itself was more and more to divert its intellectual efforts into nonliterary channels in the 1840s and 1850s.....
