About This Item
Tokyo: Tokyo Gallery, 1962. First Edition.
Square Small Quarto ( 9 1/4 inches / 238 mm) illustrated folder containing three sheets.
A beautiful, striking exhibition folder announcing a show at Tokyo Gallery, June 18-30, 1962. It features a dramatic six-panel abstract work, printed on both sides, a photograph of the artist printed on translucent rice paper, with an introduction by Shinichi Segui in Japanese on the verso, and a third sheet with a color reproduction of an artwork. Segui's introduction appears in English and French on the inside rear cover of the folder, followed by a short chronology.
Yoshishige Saito (1904-2001) was an important abstract painter and sculptor who was an influential leader of Japan's avant-garde, both before and after World War II. During his lifetime, he had numerous museum and gallery shows. He has attracted renewed interest in the last few years, with galleries in Europe and the United States showing his works. The works depicted in this folder clearly show the influence of Abstract Expressionism. And with the six-panel abstract work included in the folder, the exhibition announcement is a beautiful tribute to Saito.
OCLC shows two institutional copies, at the Thomas J. Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and at Swarthmore College. SCARCE.
CONDITION: Sheets with slight toning along edges, folder with a bit of soiling. A Near Fine copy.
