Internally clean and unmarked; a few pages in the first chapter are corner-bumped. Dust jacket lacking rear flap; edge-chipped and scuffed; not price clipped ($2.50); in an archival mylar sleeve. 364 pages. A very attractive copy in a rare dust jacket. Nineteen true stories of escapes from American prisons by the noted criminologist Edward H. Smith, published posthumously. According to the preface, written by a fellow criminologist, Smith died just prior to completing the volume. Includes escapes from Sing-Sing, San Quintin, Joliet, Leavenworth, The Tombs, among others. Edward H. Smith (1885-1927) studied at the University of Kansas and the University of Jena, at the latter of which he studied under Dr. Ernst Haeckel. He was the Sunday editor of The Chicago Tribune before coming to New York in 1912. In addition to being on the staff of The New York Sunday World, he also wrote on criminology for The Saturday Evening Post, Collier's, and other periodicals. His other books are Famous Poison Mysteries, Con, Mysteries of the Missing, and The New Criminology.
