About This Item

New York: M. Barrows and Company Inc, 1943. Octavo, 308 pages. First edition. Adams was a cookery columnist for PM, a newspaper published for eight years in New York City, during the Second World War, which was frequently accused of left-leaning tendencies. The book was not written just as a wartime cookbook, because Adams thought of a cookbook as "a means of feeding the body as well as the mind...". Nonetheless the book offers up menu planning for both low and medium costs, with adjustments for seasonality. "Food is fun. The more difficult it is to get, the less variety there is available, the greater the challenge to those of us who believe it is fun to prove we are right." Previous owners inscription to free front endpaper. Near very good, in tan cloth with red decoration. Dust jacket designed by Lieberman in near very good condition with a bit of wear to the top and bottom of the spine, and light staining on the back.
