Philadelphia, Pa: John C. Winston Co, 1904. Hardcover. Fair. 293 p.: frontispiece; 19 cm. Publisher's grey cloth printed in red, blue, and black with illustration of boy delivering telegram on front. No dust jacket. No date of publication. Verso of title page contains list of Alger books published by A.K. Loring and the original date of copyright by Loring, 1878. During Loring's bankruptcy in 1881, Porter and Coates bought the plates for the Alger books. Winston purchased the stock of Porter and Coates in 1904. Inscription dated Dec. 25, 1910 on front free endpaper. This book would have been published between 1904 and the year it was inscribed, 1910. First published in book form by A.K. Loring as part of the Pacific Series, which was inspired by Alger's visit to California, Oregon, and Washington Territory in 1877 and "chronicles the adventures of Tom Nelson in crossing the continent in 1850." In Fair Condition: covers are soiled and rubbed; back joint starting to separate from head of spine; rear endpapers and a few pages are soiled; pages are tight.
