About This Item

[Simi Valley, California]:: Pie in the Sky Press,, 2012.. Edition of 33. 6.75 x 8.5"; 37 pages. Letterpress printed with hand set Centaur and Arrighi, Massey Initials and ornaments on handmade Khadi paper. Map background is a suicide linoleum block. Map details and photographs are printed from polymer plates. Bound into a bison leather cover with a wrap band, ties, tackets, and deer horn buttons. Map slipped into front flap. Rebecca Chamlee, Colophon: "This book marks the 40th anniversary of the death of my father, William Zane Chamlee, the author of this story. At the same time, I hope to honor the memory of Floyd Chamlee, my father's first cousin, who died in July 2008. An excerpt of a letter written by Floyd is quoted in the foreword." Folded and tucked into the leather binding is a letterpress printed map showing the journey west that young Dave Chamlee followed. The trail begins in Sweetwater, Tennessee, then continues through Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, and New Mexico. A bildungsroman, pardner. After minimal background on young Dave Chamlee, the majority of the book recounts his years as a cowboy in Texas — gunfights, boots, and cowboy hats. Rebecca Chamlee, blog: "The binding of the new book is long-stitch sewn into a limp bison leather cover with sheep leather head and tail ties and deer horn buttons. There is a strip of leather on the spine that helps it to hold its shape. There is a pocket inside the front cover to hold a map. The binding takes parts of the ancient Nag Hammadi Codices where the cover is bound with a wrap band as well as ties on top and bottom and tackets in the corners for reinforcement.
