About This Item

Philadelphia: M. Carey & Sons, [1819]. First American edition (from the 2nd London edition). Quarto. xii, [2], 124 pp. plus 114 full page engravings. Full tree calf, expertly rebacked to style, spine compartments densely gilt and with red and green morocco gilt lettering label, marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate. Title page browned along edges and with minor edge-wear. Signed by "M.D. Patterson, U.S. Navy" on title and at beginning of text. Old semicircular pale stain to top part of text, mainly nominal but most easily seen from pp. 60-80. Scattered foxing. A nice presentation for this early American nautical manual. As this was intended to be used as a manual this title is often found in well-used condition.
