A tight, clean, sound copy in color wraps with very minor overall shelf wear with some browning of the paper edges and yellowing of the paper plus there are the usual library stamps, marks, labels, and pocket on the spine, the copyright page, and the inside surface of the back cover plus there is a clear plastic lamination applied to the covers. Translated from the German by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser. A novel about human corruption, and the interconnections between the will to power and the urge to submit. The story is set among a group of students at a military boarding school in Austria before the fFirst World War. The main character is a somewhat detached youth who, along with two other students, systematically persecute one of their fellow schoolmates, an essentially passive boy whose effeminate manner and complaisant behavior attract his tormentors' inclinations to debase themselves by torturing him.
