About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape, 1964. 4th printing. 19x12cm, 252pp. Boldly signed by Fleming in blue ink on the ffep. Black cloth stamped in gilt and white, illustrated jacket by Richard Chopping. Bookplate of Frank J. Farrell to front pastedown. Few marginal smudges, old bookseller's note in pencil to rear endpaper else clean internally. Boards worn and rubbed through at corners and bottom edge. Evidence of minor adhesive repair at spine ends of rear joint. Some soiling to boards, spine cocked. Presented with a correct 4th printing jacket which is nicely preserved and shows some rubbing and soiling. A very good copy.
Signed copy of this 8th book to feature James Bond, collecting five shorter 007 stories. For Your Eyes Only was the first of only two collections, Fleming generally writing in the novel format. The second collection, Octopussy and The Living Daylights was published in 1966, two years after the author's death.
We have observed copies of the fourth printing with gift inscriptions as early as April of 1964, the book likely being published within the first few months of the year. Fleming would die of a heart attack in August, making this a very late example of his signature. .
