About This Item

London: The Folio Society, 2005. Introduction by Margaret MacMillan. Pp. xxii+226(last blank), frontispiece portrait, 14 plates, code text of the telegram, sources, notes, index; med. 8vo, qr. brown cloth, pictorial papered boards, spine lettered in gilt; within brown papered slipcase, a little shelf worn; The Folio Society, London, 2004. Second printing with minor revision. *First published by Constable & Co in 1958 in the U.K. and in the USA by Viking Press. The Zimmerman Telegram was a secret January 1917 communication from the German Government to the Mexican Government proposing an alliance between them. The German reasoning was that an alliance would prompt some American Forces to be deployed south in the event that the USA entered into WWI to protect its southern borders from invasion by Mexico. In return, the Germans promised to restore Texas, Arizona and New Mexico to the Mexicans when they [the Germans] won the war. History shows that this did not eventuate.
