About This Item
Nuremberg, 1729. Print. Uncolored copperplate engraving. Sheet measures 15" x 18 1/2". Image measures 13 3/4" x 16 5/8"<br/> <br/> Impressively detailed bird's eye view of a riding tournament, engraved by Nunzer after a sketch made by his brother, Engelhard Nunzer, for "Neu-eroffnete Hof-Kriegs-Reit-Schul" by Georg Englehard von Lohneysen. Three race tracks enclosed by wooden railings extend across the arena, with their entrances and exits decoratively embellished with vines and flowers. Hundreds of spectators are depicted along both sides of the stadium, and a line of men wearing feathered hats are portrayed as richly engraved silhouettes along the entrance wall in the foreground. From a large palatial structure in the background, more spectators watch from balconies. Some foxing, stains, toning and repairs to folds. Hard to find.<br/> <br/>
