About This Item
Baltimore: Lucas, Fielding, 1824. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 11 x 9.25 inches. Page measures 15 x 11.75 inches. Some minor foxing, some staining at page corners. In very good condition.

This map shows the Empire of Brazil shortly after it declared independence from Portugal. Large but sparsely populated, the country at this time enjoyed a general stability that manifests here in Smith's dignified rendering. The map's most striking feature is its cartography, which frames the borders of Brazil in flowing lines, situating the new country in its surrounding geography. The map is in very good condition with some minor foxing, some staining at page corners. Fielding Lucas Jr. was an artist, publisher and cartographer active in the early 19th century. He published his first atlas in 1815 and became known as the earliest successful commercial map published in Baltimore. He was also the first stationer in the United States.
