According to Diodorus, the Sicilian historian, Daedalus, prototype of all artists, fashioned as a thanksgiving offering to Aphrodite for his escape from the wrath of Minos, King of Crete. Was the story meant to be taken as fact or legend? Mr. Cronin's search for the answer to this question led him to all those parts of Siciliy which have enchanged men since Daedalus first set foot there. He observed its tombs and temples, its fruitful valleys and teeming piazzas and describes them with the freshness of love and understanding knowledge.
