About This Item
NY: Harper, 1863. War Dated. HB. G+. Some staining, book was evidently used in the field. It must have been gifted after the War by Richardson to the Canandaigua Library, where a bookplate was added./No Jacket.. [Attribution/Manual] Believe this book's content to be not too dissimilar to other books with like title. Butterfield was credited with introducing "Taps" into service use, which may be a myth as it could have been an earlier Irish pub melody. Butterfield earned the Medal of Honor at Gaines Mill in 1862. Not in Nevins.
Attribution to Major Charles A. Richardson of the 126th New York Infantry. He enlisted on 9/10/1862 in Canandaigua, NY as a first lieutenant. He was captured at Harper's Ferry during the Antietam Campaign but immediately paroled. He was wounded at Gettysburg and again at Petersburg on 6/16/1864. The latter wound caused his discharge on 9/3/1864. His unit is one of Fox's Fighting 300.
