About This Item
Griffin, Bohn, and Company, 1862. Hardcover. Good. As described by the publishers, the book "completes the series of papers on the lower phases of London Life, so ably commenced by Mr. Henry Mayhew". The book is a "complete account of the Criminal Prisons of London", based on investigations within the prisons or based on interviews with prison officers. Prisons are described thusly: "...prisons are places of punishments; idleness, which was formerly the rule, is now almost banished, and consequently, the habits of order and industry, which are forced upon all inmates." 634 pp., plus two pages of advertisements. 6 ½" x 9". Tables and black and white illustrations throughout. Condition: Rebound, possibly in 1937, by the Indiana University Library. Black cloth boards are in very good condition, minor rubbing to edges; title, call number, and Indiana University in gilt to spine. Binding is tight, half-title and title page have been repaired, rear paste-down still has library check-out slip, some sporadic repairs and underlining throughout text. A sturdy copy of this otherwise scarce text.
