1837 legal summons addressed to the Sheriff of Hinds County, Mississippi, William C. Demoss. The sheriff is hereby directed to summon Maxfield Anderson, William Anderson Sr., and William Anderson Jr. to give evidence in the case of David Anderson, plaintiff, against Frederick Miller, defendant.
The Andersons were summoned to appear on the third day of the October 1837 term by Judge George Coalter, Judge of the Seventh Judicial District. The summons is signed by court clerk, G.E. Beauchamp. There is docketing on the verso as well as Sheriff Demoss' acknowledgement of receipt dated October 4, 1837.
In 1830, prior to serving as Sheriff of Hinds County, William C. Demoss was appointed an Associate Justice of the county court of Hinds County and served as a member of its probate court.¹ An owner of enslaved African Americans, he also served in the Mississippi legislature and was a founding trustee of Hampden Academy at Raymond.
Of mention: Maxfield Anderson may be the progenitor of the Anderson Family of Harrison County, Texas.
